MAINTENANCE OF CONCRETE - Maintenance of concrete

For the maintenance and treatment of concrete, ferroconcrete and render materials we have developed materials for the BetaFORM® line. Individual types (re-profi ling renders, smoothing levelling layers, protective and adhesive coats) are used for implementing all stages of maintenance work. Technical and technological parameters of all substances have been mutually harmonized; therefore, it is necessary to use them within a comprehensive system. Materials can be used for the repair of stairs, walls or in panel buildings, also in the industrial sector.

With the combination of various environmental influences, water and salt, there are chemical changes in the surface layer of the concrete which becomes fragile and more porous. Air oxygen, water and salt penetrate to the steel reinforcement and cause its corrosion. The corrosive layer increases its volume and causes further destruction of the concrete.

For the specification of the optimal procedure of maintenance it is necessary to have professional evaluation of the local conditions and amount of breaking of concrete homogenity, on the base of which the recommended procedure and suitable substance are stated. Depending on the used materials, it is possible to achieve a coloured, smooth or grained structure of the surface with very low air permeability for all common aggressive media.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE

The base must be without dust, dirt, grease and any biotic micro-organism (moulds, algae). All non-cohesive, mechanically or chemically destroyed parts must be removed. The status of the naked steel reinforcement of ferroconcrete elements must be professionally evaluated in terms of statics. The cleaned and degreased surface of the iron reinforcement is given a double coating of BetaFORM® S01.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The mechanical strength of the concrete base and the adhesion of the subsequent layer is increased by the filling of the base with a penetration solution (varnish EH) or an adhesive coat (BetaFORM® S01). After the drying of surface (within 3 hours), the missing material is replaced by re-profiling mortar BetaFORM® S05 or BetaFORM® S07 depending on the thickness of the added layer. It is applied in one layer by levelling with a stainless smoother. The contact and interaction of the re-profi ling mortar with treated steel reinforcement renews the original static stability of the element.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          The re-profiled surface can be locally or continuously smoothed by a levelling layer of BetaFORM® S09 on the hardened surface (not earlier than after 24 hours). It is possible to reinforce the levelling layer with reinforced mesh. The smoother re-profi led surface should be theated by double protective coating of BetaFORM® S02. The first coating is applied with brush on the hardened surface no earlier than after 24 hours; the second layer is implemented by levelling immediately after drying the surface of the fi rst layer no later than within 3 hours. It is possible to perform additional hydrophobization after 24 hours with the covering varnish SI. An alternative surface treatment is a double fl exible coat with acrylate paint GamaDEKOR® FLEX or paint on concrete GamaCOLOR S.
